Was können die Zuseher von der heurigen Eishockey Weltmeisterschaft erwarten?
Den Zusehern stehen die sportlich hochstehendsten Wettkämpfe seit 40 Jahren bevor. Ein noch nie da gewesenes sportliches Ereignis erwartet uns und auch die Spieler freuen sich schon ausnahmslos auf die nächsten zwei Wochen. Alle sind heiß aufs Eis.Um den Zusehern in der Halle nur das Beste zu bieten haben wir ein sehr kostspieliges Hallen-Entertainment engagiert. Darüber hinaus arbeiten wir in den Eisarenen mit modernster Lichttechnik, welche die Spielsstätten in moderne Arenen verwandeln wird. Auch Abseits der Eisfläche werden die Zuseher den Eishockeysport spüren können.
Welche Besonderheiten bietet das Rahmenprogramm?
Das qualitativ hochwertige Rahmenprogramm wird sich von der offiziellen Eröffnung des Bundespräsidenten über einen High-Class VIP-Bereich bis hin zu den Fandörfern erstrecken.Im Fandorf finden die Besucher Zeit zum Ausrasten und Entspannen und bleiben mit der Veranstaltung immer auf Tuchfühlung. Wer keine Tickets für ein Spiel mehr bekommen sollte kann sich dort auch die Spiele in Ruhe ansehen. Wien und Innsbruck werden sich als „Herzeigestädte“ präsentieren.
Wie lange wurde im Vorfeld an diesem Großevent gearbeitet?
Die Vergabe fand im Jahr 2001 statt. Danach arbeiteten wir, ermutigt durch ein junges engagiertes Team, über drei Jahre am reibungslosen Ablauf der Weltmeisterschaft.Was anfänglich mit drei Leuten begann endet nun in der Schlussphase mit 30 bis 40 Mitarbeitern die rund um die Uhr nur für die Weltmeisterschaft im Einsatz sind. Während der Wettkämpfe kommen noch 200 freiwillige Helfer dazu, welche die Durchführung diese Großereignisses erst ermöglichen.
Kann die Weltmeisterschaft schon jetzt als erfolgreich bezeichnen werden?
Lieber wäre es mir die WM im Nachhinein als Erfolg zu betrachten. Der Kartenverkauf lief sehr gut und es haben sich hochrangige Politiker aus dem In- und Ausland angekündigt. Zum Beispiel der slowakische Präsident Gasparovic. Er ist ein großer Eishockeyfan und wird sich kein Spiel seiner Mannschaft entgehen lassen.
Was für einen Stellenwert hat das Turnier, ihrer Meinung nach, im internationalen Blickfeld?
Wir haben es hier mit der größten Sportveranstaltung im Jahr 20005 zu tun. Das Medieninteresse ist enorm und rund 750 Millionen Menschen werden die Spiele der Weltmeisterschaften verfolgen. Im Rahmen der Titelkämpfe wird ein Internationales Coaching Symposium abgehalten. Darüber hinaus nehmen 64 Nationen am Kongress des Internationalen Eishockeyverbandes teil. Wien und Innsbruck werden in diesen zwei Wochen zum Mittelpunkt der Eishockeywelt.
Was bringt die WM für die Zukunft des Österreichischen Eishockeysports?
Die Weltmeisterschaft sollte ein Motivationsschub für die Jugend unseres Landes sein und der, ohnehin schon so boomende Sport, sollte noch mehr Zulauf bei den Menschen finden. Da diese WM im Vergleich zu den Titelkämpfen von 1996 vom ÖEHV selbst organisiert wurde, ist auch bei den Sponsorenverhandlungen ein Hauptaugenmerk darauf gelegt worden, die Sponsoren auch nachhaltig für den Eishockeysport zu binden.
Seit 1967 gibt es in einem 10 Jahres Zyklus Eishockey Weltmeisterschaften in Österreich. Gibt es langfristige Pläne zur Austragung eines solchen Großereignisses in den nächsten zehn Jahren?
Offen gesagt sehe ich diese Situation sehr locker. Um den internationalen Standards einer solchen Großveranstaltung zu entsprechen benötigen wir aber eine große, moderne Multifunktionsarena. Ich kann nur unsere Politiker ersuchen, sich in ihren Überlegungen damit Auseinander zu setzen. Österreich ist ein Eishockeyland und immer mehr Menschen finden Gefallen an diesem schönen Sport. Viele Politiker werden sich im Rahmen der Wettkämpfe selbst ein Bild davon machen können und auch am IIHF Kongress wird sicher darüber geredet werden. Dass Österreich als Austragungsort ideal ist, wissen wir ja schon lange.
Was erwarten Sie sich persönlich von der Weltmeisterschaft?
Ich hoffe, dass wir insgesamt 250.000 Leute zu den Spielen bringen. Die Freunde und Fans des Eishockeysports sollen ein großartiges Fest erleben. „Fair Play und Respect“ sowohl auf dem Eis als abseits der Eisfläche, das ist mein Motto für die Titelkämpfe.

What may visitors expect from the Ice Hockey World Championships?
The fans are upon the most prestigious championships since 40 years. An unprecedented sporting event is expected and all the players are eagerly gearing up for the next weeks to come. They are hot for the ice.To satisfy our visitors entirely we engaged a costly entertainment program for the event. Moreover most recent light engineering technique will transform the arenas into highly modern venues. Even beside the hockey-rink the spectators will be able to get in touch with the sport very close.
What are the highlights of the supporting program?
The high-quality supporting program runs from the official opening ceremony, held by Austrian president Fischer, over a high-class VIP area, to an unrivalled fan-area in front of the stadium. The fan-park itself will give visitors the opportunity to relax and chill out but anyhow, stay in contact with the event. People who do not get tickets for a match may watch the game here without excitement. Vienna and Innsbruck will present themselves at their best.
How long did the preparatory work for this major event last?
The allocation took place in 2001. Encouraged by a young and dedicated team, we now have been working for over three years to make the championships flow smoothly. What started with three people now resulted in 30 to 40 employees working day and night for this big event. To provide the realisation of this major happening we need 200 additional volunteers during the tournament.
Can the championships be regarded as successful by now?
I would prefer to look back at successful championships after the event. The ticket sale was very positive and many important national and international politicians have announced their presence. Slovakia’s president Gasparovic, who is a big ice hockey fan, will not miss a single game of his team.
What kind of international significance does this tournament implicate in your opinion?
It is the biggest sporting event in 2005. The concern of the media is enormous and about 750 Millions of people will watch the games. Within the scope of this competition an international Coaching Symposium will take place. Furthermore representatives of 64 Nations will participate in the IIHF congress. Vienna and Innsbruck will be the centre of the “ice hockey world” in this two weeks.
What kind of influence could the championships bring for Austria’s ice hockey in the future?
The championship ought to be an initial motivation for young people in our country and the sport itself should be on vogue for a more and more people. In comparison with the last championships in Austria, in 1996, this tournament was organised by the Austrian Ice Hockey Federation itself. Through effective corporations with our sponsoring partners we try to achieve a long lasting value for ice hockey in Austria.
Since 1967 Austria is organising Ice Hockey World Championships every ten years. Is there a long time strategy to organise such a major event in the next ten years?
Frankly speaking, I see this situation from a relaxed angle. To correspond to international standards, we need a new modern multifunction-arena. I can only appeal to our politicians to take this subject into consideration. Austria is an “ice hockey country” and more and more people take an interest in this amazing sport. Many politicians will get an idea of the sport during the tournament and moreover the IIHF congress will also deal with the subject. We already know that Austria is an ideal venue.
What do you expect from the Championships personally?
I hope that a total of 250.000 people will attend the matches. The friends and fans of ice hockey should experience a great event. My motto is: “Fair Play and Respect” on the ice as well as off the ice.
